Top Gun 2 Theory: Why Maverick Is Still A Captain?

Top Gun 2 also referred to as Top Gun: Maverick is the upcoming movie of Hollywood and is a sequel to the famous action film Top Gun, which was directed by Tony Scott and released in 1986. Top Gun: Maverick will be directed by Joseph Kosinski. One of Hollywood’s popular and top-rated actors Tom Cruise is the lead actor in this series. Tom Cruise as LT Pete” Maverick” Mitchell is playing the role of a US Navy pilot in this film.

After serving the US Navy as one of the best Navy pilots for more than 30 years, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is still serving as a Captain in the upcoming film, Top Gun 2. But the question remains the same – Why did such a brilliant pilot not get any promotion for more than 30 years? In the film, Top Gun, Cruise was depicted as one of the best pilots of the US Navy with extremely excellent flying skills.

Everything We Know About Maverick After Top Gun

After the 1980’s film, Top Gun, the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick will be the proper sequel to the original movie depicting the consequences of not giving promotion to Pete. There are several details extracted from the original Top Gun, which will provide an idea to the fans what happened to the US Navy’s one of the best pilots after Top Gun.

At the end of the original film, Top Gun, Maverick was shown as a Lieutenant (O-3), and he will be seen at the same designation in the Top Gun: Maverick as well. After a continuous service of 30 years, he would have been promoted three times. We cannot doubt the ability of Maverick to climb the Navy ladder. He became a Lieutenant Commander (0-4), after that Commander (0-5), and then a Captain (0-6). Therefore, it clearly shows his ability, but still, he has been stuck as a Captain after his last promotion.

Reasons Why Maverick Could Still Be A Captain In Top Gun 2

There are possibly three reasons why Maverick could still be a Captain in the film Top Gun 2. The first reason could be the previous enlisted experience, in which it is considered that the person has already climbed the hierarchy to become a Lieutenant in Top Gun. However, it does not seem to be the truth in the case of Maverick. The second possible reason could be the 2019 National Defence Authorization Act, according to which, he is retired and still allowed to serve the Nation because of his extraordinary efforts and bringing something very special for the organization. However, it is also a very rare case. The third reason is if Maverick left active duty for some duration only to return.

There could be two more reasons apart from the three discussed above that may be able to explain why Maverick is still a Captain in the film, Top Gun: Maverick. The first reason could be Maverick’s tendency to not obey the orders from the higher authorities in some of the cases. It can be considered as immaturity and can result in the promotion of others in the queue instead of Maverick despite his excellent skills. The last reason could be his choice of flying and destroying the targets. As we have already seen in Top Gun, Maverick is a passionate person for flying, and promotion could make him sit behind a desk. It may be possible that Maverick is not interested in giving orders to his juniors as he wanted to be an excellent aviator.

After considering all the possibilities of Maverick still being a Captain in the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, we can conclude that his promotion is directly related to his passion and behavior. It may be possible that due to his passion he does not want to get promoted and the other reason is being a disobeying pilot and operating missions by his ideas only can create issues in his promotion. The final decision is going to be revealed in the Top Gun: Maverick.
