Netflix and Avatar Creators Part Ways

Netflix and Avatar Creators Part Ways

Creative differences between Netflix and show creators have become an old story now, and the latest names in the list are the original creators of Netflix adaptation of the live-action animation Avatar: The Last Airbender, Michael Dante DiMartino, and Bryan Konietzko.

The creators have decided to no longer work with Netflix citing “creative differences.”

After working tirelessly for two years, DiMartino publicly stated that he and Bryan would no longer be at the helm of Avatar: The Last Airbender. DiMartino, in fact, has said that the duo is no longer working with Netflix since the month of June.

DiMartino revealed the news through a blog post. Netflix said that it was committed to honoring their vision for this retelling. It remarked that things didn’t go as they had expected.

DiMartino also added, “Leaving the project was necessary for my happiness and creative integrity. I realized that I couldn’t control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I responded.”

DiMartino made it clear through his blog post that he accepts that his relationship with Netflix had become vexing and exasperating. However, he made it clear that he didn’t want to discourage the people who are still working on it. Instead, he expressed disappointment by saying, “whatever version ends up on the screen, it will not be what Bryan and I had envisioned or intended to make.”

It was in the year 2018 that Netflix announced that popular animated show Avatar: The Last Airbender will be coming on its OTT platform as a live-action series with DiMartino and Konietzko in the swing of things. As of now, the series will move forward without the original creators.

Though Netflix boasts about giving creative freedom to the production team, it has faced criticism in the past over the same “creative differences” with some of the creators.

Netflix is known for the quality of content and has maintained its stance that it doesn’t like to interfere too much on which direction the story is heading. Rather, as the people working at Netflix have confidently said, it focuses on trusting the creators rather than judging them. However, it has been reported that they pass “notes” with suggestions, opinions, and revisions regarding the creative direction of a TV show while it is in production.

It was only in the year 2018 that Netflix and Marvel parted ways suspending the further production of popular TV shows such as Daredevil, the Punisher, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders. Ava DuVernay also left a documentary citing “creative differences.”

Here is a List of Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters You Will See in The Legend of Korra

Here is a List of Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters You Will See in The Legend of Korra

The Legend of Korra is a follow-up series to Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Last Airbender initially aired on children’s television channel Nickelodeon and is now available for online streaming on Netflix. The sequel aired four years after the first part ended its run. Even though the story of The Legend of Korra will be different from the first one, there are quite a few characters from the previous installment who have featured in both the series.

Avatar: The Last Airbender had a run of three seasons and aired from February 2005 to July 2008. The animated series was set in a world where a few people could manipulate the elements of earth, fire, water, and air. This was done through the Chinese martial arts technique known as bending.

The story revolved around a boy named Aang, the current avatar who could bend all four elements and has the responsibility to maintain a sense of peace and harmony between the world’s four nations. Aang is also the last survivor belonging from Air Nomads along with his friends who have a goal of ending the Fire Nation’s war against the other nations of the world.

The Legend of Korra is set 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender. So, here are characters from the first installment you will see in the follow-up.

Katara

Katara is the wife of Aang, the Airbender from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Since she appeared in The Legend of Korra, it is evident she survived. Aang and Katara have three children- Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin. Her survival into old age made it clear to the viewers that she is one of the surviving members of Team Avatar while the other two were Zuko and Toph.

Katara is the only character to teach the technique of bending to two different avatars. The first one was Aang. The second one was Aang’s reincarnation Korra, born in the southern water tribe. She mentored the latest avatar in water bending. Although, at the start of the series Korra has mastered the art of bending fire, earth, and water.

Aang

Aang was the avatar who could bend the elements of earth, water, fire and air in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Since Korra is his reincarnation, it is safe to say that he died before the events of The Legend of Korra. The scenes switching between past and present showed a grown version of Aang along with other members of the team. There was a spiritual connection between Aang and Korra because he was a predecessor, and that gave way for him to come in the form of a spirit and guide her.

Zuko

Born into the Fire Nation Royal Family, Zuko was a member of The Avatar team. He became the fire lord and the master. Bruce Davison voices the character. The character’s left side of the face has a prominent scar that was inflicted on him by his father, Fire Lord Ozai, shortly before banishing him. Zuko is also a member of Team Avatar.
