Guide to Improve Security Shield in Microsoft Defender

Guide to Improve Security Shield in Microsoft Defender

Windows 10 users might be aware of the Microsoft Defender or Windows Defender – an in-built security tool that protects your device from malware. It silently works in the background and unleashes real-time security agents that check for changes in several areas of your system to find out the issues caused by spyware. It is powerful enough to remove ActiveX software, and it also has integrated support for the Microsoft SpyNet that helps you report spyware and other susceptible changes. All of its powerful features always work in the background to improve the security on your device. But you can take this security one step higher and save your desktop using the methods given below:

Remove Hidden Malware

Windows Defender automatically performs a Quick Scan on your system every day to check if there are any threats in your folders. But you can choose to do it manually by going to the Settings. Then, click on Update & Security and select Windows Security. Then, click on Virus & Threat Protection and tap on Quick Scan.

You can also choose to do a Full Scan by clicking on the Scan options. Doing so will ensure that all the programs and files on your PC get checked. If you want to check only a few files and folders, then click on Custom Scan. If you believe that the scan has failed to find the errors you suspected, then click on Microsoft Defender Offline Scan to find it hard to detect files. Don’t forget to take the backup of essential files and documents as these procedures might remove your files and restart the device to eliminate the errors.

If any error is detected while scanning, your PC’s screen will blackout, and you’ll be prompted to remove the errors. Your device will boot back to normal once the procedure gets completed.

Protection Against Ransomware

You don’t want to run into the threat of getting ransomware on your device as it will block your access to the files and might even threaten to publish the stored data. Ransomware makes the victim pay for giving them access to their files, but there is no assurity if that will happen. At times, the decryption fails to work and causes you to experience some major problems.

By default, Microsoft Defender’s ransomware protection is turned off so that you can access legitimate programs. But you can enable this protection measure to ensure that you don’t get threatened by ransomware. To use this method, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Virus & Threat Protection screen and navigate to Ransomware Protection.
  2. Click on Manage Ransomware Protection.
  3. Turn on the toggle under the Controlled Folder Access to keep your data (e.g., Pictures, videos, folders, documents, etc.) safe.
  4. To increase the protection, go to Protected Folders and click on ‘Add A Protection Folder.’
  5. You can choose to allow some programs to access the files by clicking on ‘Allow an App Through Controlled Folder Access.’

Automatically Block Malware

As we mentioned, your device gets real-time protection against malware via Microsoft Defender. It also uses its updated virus definition to scan and block any unknown threat appearing on your device. It also offers a Cloud-Delivered Protection feature that protects the device against threats and uploads details about Microsoft’s suspicious files to check if they are safe for your system.

Usually, these features are enabled by default, but you should always check if these have been turned off, so ensure that you don’t let any malware fixate on your device. Sometimes, security programs for different purposes disable these settings automatically. So, ensure that you check these settings and enable the necessary features. You can make the settings using the steps mentioned below:

  1. Go to Virus & Threat Protection and click on Manage Settings.
  2. Under the same setting section, switch on the toggle for Cloud-Delivered Protection.
  3. Turn on the toggle for Automatic Sample Submission to submit the analysis of the suspicious files to Microsoft.

You can rely on Microsoft to protect your privacy, and in case they detect any dangerous file on your desktop, they will block it on your PC and other Microsoft Defender users’ systems. They focus on securing the whole community.

Configure Defender’s Firewall Settings

Windows or Microsoft Defender Firewall can protect you as long as you keep the useful toggles on securing your system. Go to Windows Security and click on Firewall & Network Protection to ensure that the toggles for Domain, Private, and Public options are turned on. You can navigate to the Advanced Settings to customize the rules and regulations of the security settings. From the Advanced Settings, choose Inbound Rules (for controlling the data in your PC) or Outbound Rules (for managing data transfer). You can also choose to block some ports using the following steps:

  1. From the Advanced Settings, select Inbound Rules and click on New Rule given on the right-hand sidebar.
  2. From the New Inbound Rule Wizard, click on Port and tap on Next.
  3. In the box given for Specific Local Ports, insert ’21’ and click on Next.
  4. Now, select Block the Connection, and click twice on Next.
  5. Add a name for the new rule, and click on Finish to apply the changes.
  6. If you are unsatisfied with the new rule you created or experienced any problems, click on it and select Disable Rule or Delete.

These methods will help you make the most out of Microsoft Defender and get the best security levels on your desktop.

Things to Know About Microsoft Surface Duo’s Dual-Screen

Things to Know About Microsoft Surface Duo’s Dual-Screen

On September 10, Microsoft launched its Surface Duo Dual-Screen smartphone powered by a modified version of Google’s Android software. It has a foldable design that looks like two mini tablets. Its two 5.6-inch OLED screens together form an 8.1-inch display, 9.9mm thickness, and weighs 8.8 ounces. The device costs $1,399 for 128GB of storage. Overall the gadget looks like a tiny notepad made of metal and glass. It seems like Microsoft is following the dual-screen phone trend as Samsung and Motorola have also understood the potential of a dual-screen gadget.

Some time ago, Microsoft had promised to reinvent dual-screen computers, and it seems like Surface Duo is their way of reinvention. In 2021, Microsoft will launch another smartphone called Surface Neo, and it will probably be a better version of the Surface Duo.

We are in the middle of the pandemic, where the online world and the requirement of a robust smart gadget are prominent. The company might be inspired by the amount of online space, multi-tasking, and phone storage we require, and thus, they created the Surface Duo. Our smartphones are often overburdened with the work, multi-tasking, space requirement, etc. that our phones give up before their life expectancy. If you switch between different screens quite often to stay active at online working, then a phone like Surface Duo might prove beneficial for you.

But for the rest of the population, let’s figure out if the Surface Duo is worth your money or if it is a technological upgrade that no one needs.

Why do we need two screens?

As per the research, it turns out that Microsoft’s Surface Duo team believes that two screens will increase productivity, and they treat this dual-screen like using a portable pair of monitors. The Surface Duo aims at offering a work-friendly environment on the device while making the procedure easy to use and comfortable. The display screens are separated rather than divided as it will allow the glass to be durable and work smoothly with the Microsoft Pen. The pen is safe to use on the Surface Duo.

Display Ratio

The Surface Duo has two 5.6-inch OLED display screens with a 4:3 aspect ratio, showing the documents in a large font. People who find it difficult to read on a single screen smartphone will find it easier to read the documents and web pages on it, and it won’t strain their eyes either. Also, it will feel like you are working on a mini laptop or a tablet. The dual-display of the 5.6-inch screens form an 8.1-inch display, which will be ideal for watching movies and other videos.

Supported Apps

Each half of the Surface Duo has an accelerometer, gyroscope, and proximity sensor that detects the phone’s position and shows the apps from screen to screen. Note that all the apps cannot split into two screens together. Only Microsoft’s core productivity apps, including Outlook, Word, and OneNote, work in the dual-display mode. These apps can recognize each other, which enables it to share information between apps in seconds. It is quite similar to using drag-and-drop on an iPad.

Unfortunately, the Android apps don’t work like that on the Surface Duo. Currently, only a few third-party apps are being picked to create a Duo-optimized dual-screen Android version. Whatever the results may be, it will set a benchmark and a stepping stone for the Surface Neo smartphone. Surface Duo can determine how the company wants its Surface Neo to have in its specs.

No 5G Connectivity

Microsoft could not bring a 5G connection with a 4.8mm design, as the world is far away from that type of technology. The Surface Duo doesn’t have Wi-Fi 6 either. Microsoft compromised on these specs to offer a good-quality screen. The company has focused on display quality, hinge mechanisms, device size, and battery life. The gadget has a split battery and custom processors, which is unique on its own.

Camera

The Surface Duo’s camera is not as impressive as the screen. It is surprising to see that it has similar camera features like any other smartphone. Despite having two screens, it only features one 11-megapixel camera inside, which will act as an external camera if you flip the phone’s display. The f2.0 camera has AI and portrait mode, allowing you to shoot 4K videos at 30 and 60fps with HDR. You can also capture slow-motion videos. It is also disappointing that it doesn’t have any optical image stabilization or any specific zoom step-up and focus features like the ones available in other smartphones.

These features will help you determine if you want to spend your money on Surface Duo or not. Note that the device is protected with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5, but Microsoft has not made any claims on the drop test reliability yet.

Microsoft Announces Premonition, an Ambitious Project That Can Change the World

Microsoft Announces Premonition, an Ambitious Project That Can Change the World

Microsoft has always been working towards the safety and security of its users and now they seem to be taking it one step further. At its latest Ignite conference, Microsoft announced a robotics and sensor platform, Premonition, which will be monitoring disease carriers like mosquitos and flies. It will also be sampling these disease carriers and the samples will be analyzed by a cloud-based software stack that will soon be available for a private preview.

Microsoft stated that they want to create a system that is similar to a weather monitoring system but it will work to stop the disease outbreak. The company has been working on this project since 2015. This is a quite ambitious project and Microsoft has partnered with the Convergence Accelerator Program of National Science Foundation, Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to test the tools which it is developing under this project after a lot of research. The company is also working with the pharmaceutical company Bayer, to have a deeper understanding of vector-borne diseases and other related things.

The company is currently focusing on the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and in its Redmond campus, they have set up a “Premonition Proving Ground” to allow the researchers to test their robots, to train them, and to analyze the samples they collect. This is an Arthropod Containment Level 2 facility where they can raise and analyze mosquitoes but the company wants this system to be capable of monitoring the entire biome. Till now, the company has said to have scanned more than 80 trillion base-pairs of genomic material for biological threats.

According to Ethan Jackson, the senior director of Premonition, the 2014 Ebola outbreak led the company to realize the role of AI and cloud computing in monitoring the biome in new ways. The company has already developed a small fleet of smart robotic traps that was capable of identifying and capturing mosquitoes in 2016, the time when Zika emerged. It was a smart and powerful system that could identify up to 10,000 mosquitos in a single night. This system was used in Texas for the first time and since then Microsoft has made a lot of progress towards their purpose.

Douglas E. Norris, an entomologist and Johns Hopkins University professor of molecular microbiology and immunology, is also a part of this project and according to him, this system is going to be very useful as it will allow us to monitor the growth of mosquitoes and based on the data that will be able to spray and hit the harmful mosquitoes early before they can cause a pandemic.

Premonition is a very ambitious project of Microsoft and its success can help humankind to fight against various deadly diseases. This system relies on Microsoft Azure cloud and also tells a lot about the capabilities of AI systems of Microsoft.

Microsoft Surface Hub 2S 85-Inch Review

Microsoft Surface Hub 2S 85-Inch Review

Microsoft had this aim to redefine the offices, the physical workspaces in which businesses run. And it took the first step and came out with the Surface Hub 2S. The company recently unveiled its huge 85-inch Surface Hub 2S, aimed at large enterprise businesses. This came three years after the launch of the first-generation Microsoft Surface Hub, a massive business-focused collaboration device that is somewhere in between a smart TV and a giant tablet. Microsoft formally unleashed its first major upgrade, the Surface Hub 2S 85-inch, which has begun pre-sales and will be available in January. The massive 85-inch model is available for $2199.

The huge screen is mounted to an exceptional rolling stand built by a steel case. A section in the center of the stand contains a custom battery from APC and a power cord. You can unplug the cord to easily wheel around the Hub 2S out of the conference room to any desk in the office. All of this makes it easier to collaborate with the Hub.

Microsoft’s second-generation model comes with the same built-in apps and software as in first-generation, including Windows 10, Office 365, Microsoft Teams, and the Microsoft Whiteboard app. The major upgrades in the Surface Hub 2S are in its hardware and specifications. According to Microsoft, the 50-inch model is 40 percent lighter at 61.6 pounds, making it easier to move around. It has also got a 4K display plus, multi-touch display, and 50 percent faster graphic performance with an eighth-generation Intel i5 processor.

It also has a 4K built-in wide-angle camera clipped to the top of the unit that is specifically designed for large boardroom meetings. This camera could be detached and moved to any side of the screen and also flips back out of the way to ensure it doesn’t break when you wheel the Surface Hub through the door frame.

The Surface Hub 2 Pens are substantially larger than standard Pro Pens, as they have been designed for whiteboards. Also, you must note that the Surface Hub 2S is not a personal computer, so you will have to sign in and out each time you use the device. The device itself does not keep any of your files, as it wipes everything clean after each use. So, you need to be accessing your files via OneDrive or USB. In the times of coronavirus pandemic, where the work landscape is changing with more people working from home, a tool like Surface Hub 2S can be a boon. Is buying a Surface Hub 2S 85-inch worth it? Absolutely. It adds a large amount of value to your business in the form of customer experience, collaboration, flexibility, and time-saving.

Guide to Set Up Your Xbox One Controller with Windows 10 PC

Guide to Set Up Your Xbox One Controller with Windows 10 PC

Microsoft’s Xbox One controller is one of their most sought-after products. It is an excellent controller that will enhance your gaming session experiences. It makes it easy to play and brings fantastic controls on your fingertips. You can connect the controller with cables or use it wirelessly on your Windows PC. These controllers have long-lasting batteries that are better than any other gaming console’s controller. It offers less latency during heavy fighting games. But connecting them can seem like a task, especially if you’re new into the gaming world. To help you out, we have mentioned all the different ways that you can use to connect your Xbox One controller to your PC and steps to configure it:

Ways to Connect the Controller

There are various ways you can use to connect the Xbox One controller with your PC, but it mainly depends if you want to use cable or go wireless. Following are the methods you can use:

Use a USB Cable

Your controller comes with a micro-USB cable so that you can create a wired connection. Start by plugging the USB cable into your computer and plug the other end into the front of your controller. The connection will be established, and charging will instantly begin. Remember that you’ll have to do this every time you need to charge your controller.

Use a Wireless Adapter

This method will help you connect the controller wirelessly, but before that, you’ll need an Xbox One Wireless Adapter for Windows 10. You might find this adapter in the package of your controller. If not, you can purchase it separately. Note that this is different from the adapter for the Xbox 360 controller.

After purchasing the Wireless Adapter, plug it into a USB port on your computer. You may need to use the USB extender (included in the package) depending on how far the port is at the back of your computer. Then, hold the Xbox button on your controller to turn it on, and press the button on the adapter. Now, press the bind button on your controller. The LED on your controller will start blinking. In the meantime, it will begin searching for a connection and will stop flashing once the connection gets established.

Use Bluetooth

This method is for those who have Bluetooth support on their Xbox One controller. To check if your controller has Bluetooth support, check the surrounding of the Xbox logo on the controller. If it is similar to the plastic as the controller, i.e., without seams, then it supports Bluetooth. If you find a separation between the face of the controller and the logo, then it doesn’t support Bluetooth. Here are the steps to pair your devices together:

  1. Go to the Settings of your PC and click on Devices.
  2. Select Bluetooth & other devices, and switch on the toggle for Bluetooth so that it can search for available devices.
  3. Now, click on Add Bluetooth or Other Device and select Bluetooth.
  4. Press the Xbox logo on your controller to turn it on, and press the bind button located at the top.
  5. The Xbox Wireless Controller will appear on your device listing.
  6. Click on Pair to establish a connection.

Xbox Controller Management and Configuration

Before going any further, you must download the Xbox Accessories app from the Microsoft Store to get the most out of your controller. Following are the list of things you can do on the app to manage and configure your controller:

Update Your Xbox Controller

By default, Windows 10 comes with the relevant drivers for the Xbox One controller. It helps to update your controller and get all the benefits from the latest firmware. If you experience any issue with your controller, then you should try updating it using the following steps:

  1. Open the Xbox Accessories app and connect your controller with it.
  2. Now, click on the three horizontal dots icon and select the Firmware version. Then click on Update now.

Test the Buttons on Your Controller

If you are doubtful of the buttons on your controller being registered or not, then try testing them with the Xbox Accessories app. Start by clicking on the Beaker icon. Now you can press the buttons, pull the triggers, and move the sticks on the controller. If the controller works fine, then you’ll see a corresponding icon appearing next to ‘Button Pressed.’ If not, then your controller might be faulty.

Steps to Successful Calibration

Your controller will come calibrated in the package, but you can use the Windows calibration tool to adjust or check its responsiveness. Use the following steps carefully:

  1. Open the Start menu, search for ‘joy.cpl,’ and select the Control panel item result.
  2. The Game Controller window will open. Now, select your controller from the list and click on Properties.
  3. The Test tab will be open from where you can determine the location of your resting thumbstick on the axis.
  4. If you’re not satisfied, switch to the Settings tab and click on Calibrate. Follow the instructions carefully to calibrate the controller.
  5. You can reset everything to the original state by clicking on ‘Reset to Default’ from the Settings tab.

This guide will help you use your Xbox One controller without any issue. If these don’t help or your controller fails to respond, then get it checked from an expert.
