The 36th Spirit Awards is almost here, and Film Independent has added five television categories. The award show will be held on 24 April 2021, a day before the Oscars.

The Spirit Awards or the Film Independent Spirit Awards was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to independent directors. The winners are handed over an acrylic glass pyramid containing a shoestring depicting the bare budget of independent movies. It is produced by Film Independent, which is a non-profit arts organization and produces the LA Film Festival. The members of the Film Independent vote to determine the winner of the awards. The 35th Spirit Award was held on 8 February 2020, and the nominations of the show announced on 21 November 2019 by actress Natasha Lyonne and Zazie Beetz. The event took place inside the tent set on a beach in Santa Monica, California.

Anna Thomas and Gregory Nava founded the Independent features Project. Board member Jeanne Lucas conceived the FINDIE Awards in 1984 with writer and director Sam O’Brien as an event producer.
