How to Fix Reconnect Your Drive Error in Windows 10

Backing up is quite important and Windows 10 enables you to back up your data effortlessly. The File History drive takes all the credit for the same. Sometimes an issue occurs on your device, and you get a message on your screen saying, “You need to reconnect your driver” on your Windows 10 PC. In this article, we will show you how you can fix this issue quickly and straightforwardly.


Manually Reconnect Your Drive and Start Backup Procedure

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Launch the Settings application on your device.
  2. Select “Updates and Security” and then click “Backup.”
  3. Select “More options” and then click “Backup.”

Create File History Folder

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. You need to create a new folder on your device, namely “File history.”
  2. Right-tap on the newly created “FileHistory” folder and then select “Properties.”
  3. Move to the “Sharing” option and then select the “Share” button.
  4. Select “Everyone” in the dropdown menu and then select the “Add” option.
  5. When “everyone” has added in the list, select “Permission level” and then click “read/write.”
  6. Select the “Share” button.
  7. Additionally, you can also move to the “Advanced sharing” option under the “Sharing” tab and then select “Advanced Sharing” features.
  8. Select the “Permission” option.
  9. Once the permission window appears on your screen, remember that you have set permissions for all to “Full Control.”
  10. Select “Apply” and then hit “OK.”
  11. Once you have created and shared the FileHistory folder, then go to File History and attach the FileHistory folder for network drive.
  12. Now restart your system.

Delete File History Configuration Files

 Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Tap the Windows + R button on your keyboard to open the Run command prompt.
  2. In the Run command search field, type “%localappdata%” and then hit the “Enter” button or tap “OK.”
  3. After the above process local Data folder launch, move to the “MicrosoftWindowsFileHistoryConfiguration” folder.
  4. Now open the configuration folder to view your files in it. And then “Delete” them.
  5. Now begin File History, and then you can create backups.

Format External Hard Drive and Run File History Again

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Launch the PC that appears on the external hard drive. Right-tap on it and “select” format.
  2. Select the “Start” option to format your hard drive.
  3. Once the formatting process finished, you need to open File History again.
  4. You will be asked if you wish to save as an older version of the File history. Select “No” and then create a new backup.
