The Old Guard: 5 Things It Kept From The Comics

The Old Guard: 5 Things It Kept From The Comics

The Old Guard is a superhero film released earlier this year and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. This film is a great success. The film is based on a comic of the same name written by Greg Rucka. Although Greg has also written the screenplay of this film, there are various changes in the story of the film.

Here are the five things the movie kept from the comics.

Copley Betraying Merrick

In this film, Chiwetel Ejiofor portrays the character of a former CIA agent James Copley. According to the comic and film, at first, he pretends to be Andy’s friend but later, it is revealed that Copley works for Merrick, a villain in this film. But, after some realizations, he betrays Merrick. However, in both the film and the comic, the immortals spare him. Copley does more good things than bad to honor the memory of his wife.

The Dream

In the film The Old Guard, an enemy soldier traps the former U.S. Marine Nile Freeman and cuts his throat. However, she recovers in a very few seconds as expected. She has a dream after she wakes up, which makes the other immortals aware of her existence. To grab her before the military, Andy tracks her location so that he can save her. In the comics also, Andy tracks her and saves her. In this way, the movie has kept the same story from the comics.

The Fight Scenes

The fight scenes look better on big screens instead of comics because of wonderful choreography. One of the most memorable fight scenes from The Old Guard is between Nile and Andy when they fight in a plane. In the comics, they get killed in the battle, and the movie also similarly depicts their death scene. Although the comic tries this scene to look more realistic, it looks more stunning in the movie.

Ripple Effect

In the film, The Old Guard, Copley discovers that whenever the immortal’s group uses their powers for some good cause, a more significant ripple effect appears in the rest of the world. It happens in the same way as written in the comics. According to the information, this scene was introduced in the movie in the final stages of the screenplay.

Booker’s Betrayal

In the final stages of the movie, Andy and Booker meet Copley. After this, Booker wounds Andy and betrays her. According to Booker, Andy is immortal at this time because he is not aware that she has lost her immortality. However, he regrets this act later but gets expelled from the group for betraying Andy. This scene has been depicted in the comics as well and in a similar way.

After discussing all the five things that the movie kept from the comics, we have concluded that even if the characters in the film, The Old Guard play their roles in the similar way they play in the comics, it looks more realistic on big screens. Keeping the same story in a comic and screenplay of a movie makes the movie more sensible.

Matthew McConaughey Reveals How His “Rustin Cohle” Character Helped Win His First Oscar

Matthew McConaughey Reveals How His “Rustin Cohle” Character Helped Win His First Oscar

In McConaughey’s words, True Detective was the “best Oscar campaigner” there ever was. He has recently given an interview to GQ magazine to promote his memoir “Greenlights.” When asked about his Oscar, he replied in a straightforward tone that “True Detective” Season 1 helped him gain a strategic advantage for the 2014 Oscar because his role of Rustin “Rust” Cohle became so popular at that time that even the pundits who decided the winner of the Best Actor award had to become biased towards him.

And he isn’t lying when he says that the role has become popular. The memes of Rustin Cohle had stormed all over the social media, his dialogues were a common witty reply in almost every other tweet, his acting garnered bewilderment of critics like never before, and by the time Season 1 had ended, Rustin Cohle had etched his name in the history books as one of the greatest television characters of all time. Even if you are one of those who have been deprived of this epic series, you must have heard of this dialogue-“Time is a flat circle.” Haven’t you?

Before True Detective Season 1 hit the screens on January the 14th 2014, everybody believed that 2014 had to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year because even though he had Matthew McConaughey of Dallas Buyers Club and Chiwetel Ejiofor of “12 Years a Slave” to compete against, his role of Jordan Belfort in the film “The Wolf of Wall Street” was regarded by many as the clear cut favorite because his fans were becoming increasingly restless due to his lack of recognition at Oscars.

However, as explained by McConaughey in the interview, everything changed after the arrival of True Detective.

The release of the HBO apogee coincided with the 2014 Oscar Season, and to be even more specific, McConaughey’s Oscar nomination also came days after the release of the series. So, people who were deciding the Best Actor award winner were bombarded with the buzz around Season 1, whose popularity was soaring at an exponential rate week after week. Furthermore, even the people walking on the streets sometimes had the imprint-“I am the Yellow King.”

Long story short, everybody in the United States knew how good True Detective Season 1 is and what the actor has done in the role of the protagonist- “Rustin Cohle.”

McConaughey firmly believes that the series was a game-changer, and if it hadn’t been released around that time, he wouldn’t have gone past Leonardo DiCaprio. “I had a True Detective in your living room every week,” he told GQ.

He also added that 2014 was the best time of his career, and it will be really difficult for him to replicate that kind of adoration ever again (which also has an internet slang given for it-“McConaissance.”)

Rustin “Rust” Cohle was an eccentric, mostly deadpan phlegmatic, and philosophically opinionated character. The character once described himself in the series “as a right fit for the job,” and you would know why you have seen the series. Season 1 explores his human struggle with a case revolving around a dangerous cult that sacrifices women for religious practices. He dedicates his whole life on the case but, no matter how dark the story was, it did end on a blissful note as Cohle finally caught and killed the “Yellow King” or “Carcosa” he was looking for his entire professional life.

Rustin Cohle’s philosophy of life has been seconded and dissected by many, but his dialogues are intriguing nevertheless. We should at least credit him for making notions like “realism,” “pessimism,” and “nihilism” sound cool.

In the interview, Matthew McConaughey also revealed how he deals with the criticisms that have been with him ever since his time after the euphoria of “True Detective” and “Dallas Buyers Club” especially in regards to the underwhelming films he has done since then, such as “The Dark Tower” and “Serenity.” McConaughey revealed that he does keep a diary of all the criticism, and while he takes the constructive ones seriously, there are some who he regards as “snarky” and “biased.”

Jared Leto Has Been Confirmed to Be a Part of Justice League Director’s Cut

Jared Leto Has Been Confirmed to Be a Part of Justice League Director’s Cut

It looks like DC and Zack Snyder are leaving no stone unturned to achieve the best version of the 2017 disaster.

It kinda feels like Zack Snyder sits alone in his bedroom every day and introspects how much more he can do about the Justice League. Like any ordinary human being, his mind would generally wonder about the things that have worked 9/10 times for DC. What is that thing? Yes, you might have guessed it already.

If you are a director who wants to make a successful DC film, you would want to let that clown take a walk. However, you gotta do it properly, you know?

Nevertheless, you can expect something very different in Zack Snyder’s upcoming flick than what you had seen in the 2017 mishap.  The latest addition to the list of creative changes brought by Zack Snyder is the addition of Mr. J’s cameo (Leto’s Joker) in the original Justice League screenplay.

Though it’s a very brave step, some fans regard it as unnecessary because fans haven’t quite welcomed Jared Leto’s recruitment as the Joker.

However, it is what it is. The usually reliable Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Mr. Nobody’s actor will reprise his role as the menacing clown of Gotham City in the upcoming Justice League film. Hollywood Reporter has also reported that Leto has already joined the production team for reshoots.

It’s quite uncertain what role would Jared Leto play in the upcoming film, and though he has received massive criticism for his crotchety performance in Suicide Squad, he did appear for just a few minutes and hasn’t appeared ever again. His only other reference (verbal) came in another edgy DC live-action flick “Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,” which explored Margot Robbie’s anti-hero character and her dealings with the trauma of her breakup with Mr. J.

Nobody was in favor of Leto’s inclusion not only in this Justice League but also in the forthcoming sequels. Even Zack Snyder had excluded him from his original plans of the 2017 film amidst some ill-informed rumors that the infamous villain is going to appear in the film.

Even though the likes of Amber Heard and Ray Fisher have also joined him in the cast that has been called up for the reshoots, Jared Leto’s inclusion points towards the fact that both Snyder and the DC Studio are banking on the reiteration of the Justice League to fix what has been broken in the franchise and everyone involved in the “Snyder Cut” are doing whatever they can to make the four hours long series just right.

However, whether these changes are enough to make more people interested in the DCEU is a matter that is up for debate. What has now been confirmed is that things will be different both from his version as well as Joss Whedon’s version, which we have seen in the 2017 film.

The level of apprehensions in the mind of Snyder must be high because even he doesn’t know what he has embarked on to create.
