How to Change Ads Settings of Your Google Account

How to Change Ads Settings of Your

Google Account

Have you ever been in a scenario where you question, “Why do I keep seeing this advertisement?” Well as per Google, the ads you see are based on your interest and your search activity. Although it is evident that the algorithm of Google isn’t that accurate. This can sometimes lead to irrelevant and unwanted advertisements that keep bothering you again and again. These ads are one of the prime sources of Google’s revenue; certainly, you cannot make them stop. But what you can do is tweak in some Google settings so that what you see makes more sense for you. As an alternate option, you can also stop Google from collecting your search data for using it to show targeted ads. Let’s have a look at how you can change these settings.

Editing Your Interests and Info

You can personalize Google settings to tell Google about your interests to show you more relevant ads. You need to modify the traits of your Google account for it to show personalized advertisements.

You need to head over to your Google account settings and then click on Data & Personalization. There you will find an option called “Go to Ad Settings” in the section dedicated to ad-personalization. Make sure that the ad personalization is turned on. You will see several entries below the toggle. This includes all the characteristics and data that Google has collected or provided to Google while creating the account. Google collects certain sets of data about you like your browsing history, the sites you’re most likely to visit, the type of content you see in those sites, and other interests determined by Google from your account usage.

For updating a trait, you need to click on the Update button. You can also remove a trait of interest by clicking on the entry and then pressing Turn Off. It is worth noting that Google takes time to know about your interests and traits, so you may not see a long list of interests if you just turned on the ad personalization. Google will develop these traits about you over time, and then all the traits will be displayed on this list.

Turning Off Ad Personalization

Google allows you the liberty to opt-out of its personalized advertising feature. If you feel like you don’t want to see any ads based on your search activity or interest, or you don’t want Google to collect your data for advertisements, you can turn off the ad personalization in your Google settings. Just like before, you need to head over to your Google account and then select Data & Personalization, then click on Go To Ad Settings. You can turn off personalized ads by toggling the switch next to Add Personalization.

Nowadays, many manufacturers are showing ads in their user interface. For instance, you can find a ton of ads if you are using a Xiaomi device. You may find an option to turn these ads off in the phone settings; however, this will be different for each individual manufacturer, and there is no guarantee that you can turn this off.
